Social media has taken over our lives.
Technology has been used for education in schools, colleges and universities since the 70’s making life easier for both pupils and teachers.
Social media can be accessed with an instant. Rosaline Watts, Journalism lecturer at the Sheffield University, told me that she uses Snapchat to send her pupils demos of shorthand.
Snapchat’s popularity has increased rapidly day by day.
The daily active users of 150 million is just saying something. Personally, I do not know anyone around me who uses Snapchat and doesn’t spend at least half an hour on it per day. It is almost like a commitment.
I asked Tanisha Johnson, 18, Hillsborough College student:
- What are your thoughts on social media?
It’s an easy way to connect with friends and family. You can keep up to date with the people you know, see what they’re doing and keep track of your memories.
- What social media sites do you use?
Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, Twitter, Whatsapp, Youtube, Hotmail, iMessage, Tumblr
- Which is your favourite and “can’t-live-without” app and why?
Snapchat because everyone uses it, I can contact my friends, look at what they’re doing. The news are displayed in a more interesting content and it is very instant. You can contact friends and family from all around the world and even follow celerities to see what they’re doing at that moment in time.
- Do you think you are social and why?
Yes, I have a job in retail so I have to be social really. I also spend most of my time with friends.
- How do you think social media is affecting lives? Good and bad ways:
It can lead to cyber-bullying especially with posts being online instantly, social media is world wide and you never know what can get around in a matter of seconds. You can keep in touch with friends you haven’t seen recently or maybe even a few years. You can also meet new people which can be good and bad at the same time, you just have to be careful.
- What do you think a world without social media would be like?
For once, I think everyone would be forced to talk to each other. People would be less aware of what’s going on around them and the world that they live in.
- Lastly, what is your opinion on Snapchat?
It is an easy way to talk to friends, it allows you to see what other people have been up to in their day to day lives. It gives you the option to store memories so you can look back at them. The filters change keeping us entertained. You also have a discover section to see whats trending around the world, if you don’t read the newspaper or watch news then it’s a perfect way of getting information. All in all, I think Snapchat is one of the best social media apps there has ever been.
